Sorry, I have also difficulties to identify the first letter. I think it goes on with "..loboda".

Very difficult but I will try it:

        " Berlin, 5.10.34

        Mein lieber Herr Hauptmann!

                  Gerdan/all,

Can you read the locations written for these soldbuch Nahkampftage entries? Possibly in France but the unit is the 398 pz gren replacement unit. The unit gets hazy after 1943 and these are 44 entries?

                  Thank you!

This wehrpass wound entries page may reveal a location. This one includes a letter to the mother that appear to be mentioning the third wound resulting in the death of the soldier. I have researched the unit date locations for Russia at that time and was hoping to get a better idea.

Thank you for taking a look

First one looks like Barthelemy Frankr.(eich)
Then Mesmil-Tode (not sure on that) x 3
                      Then bei Bassilly
                      Then Chambois

                      Definitely in France.

The locations as far as I can identify them:

                          1) Barthelemy / Frankr.(eich)
                          http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saint-Barth%C3%A9lemy

                          2) Mesnil - Tode(?)

                          http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mesnil

                          3) bei Battilly (it could be that the name is not written correct "Batilly")

                          http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Batilly

                          4) Chambois

                          http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chambois

                            Hank & Gerdan,

Thank you for your time and replies!

The soldbuch unit for the 398 pz gren replacement unit appears to correlate for the units positioning to (vicinity) Paris in 44 as part of the reformed 48th inf div. Definitely not a Normandy soldbuch from what I can find in it. There is a confusing last unit entry to the 2nd pz gren rgt tht was at Normandy but the dated entries all after still show the 398th.

The wherpass is unique that the wounds are so well documented and include a silver wound document for three wounds with a packet ed and matching mint S&L wound badge sent with the letter to the mother in the book sleeve. A somber notice to the family of their sons death.

Thank you again for your time in replying.
