I wasn't going to continue on this thread since it is not my area of expertise and also this is a non-political forum. But, I do have an interest in architechure in general and "great works" in particular. For example, I sat before my television for a very long time last night watching a film on the building and present state of the Great Chinese Wall. Since I was born in China and had been on that very wall as an infant, it was fascinating.
So, I will try to choose my words carefully. I have read two of Speer's books because of my interest in the crafting of the German War Industry, such as it was. Obviously, I came to know something of his apparent absolute passion for architecture and his dreams of building great works that would represent him, and I suppose the TR, forever.
I cannot comment to Albert Speer as far as how he was as a human being or his political beliefs. My interest was and is now again after many years, in his architecture.
In that area, I have great respect for his vision and drive and the type and style of things he managed to get built and the materiels he used.
It is a sad but true fact that a lot of these kinds of building projects are built by very authoritarian regimes. The Great Wall of China, the Pyramids and some of the great temples in South America and the Far East would be examples. Kings, Dictators and High Priests get things done that most democracies cannot.
In the case of some of the works we are discussing here, I share TTT's feelings that it is a pity that they were either destroyed or left to rot.
They represented a milestone in our history, good or bad and they were monumental works, perhaps worthy of preservation.
I will stop here and hope the readers of the post understand what I am trying to say.
