I don't remember from anything I have read on it that there were any summary executions at Dachau.
A number of guards were beaten and I think a few were beaten to death and there were some killed defending the camp, but I do not think any were lined up and shot like this.
I also notice in the picture the absence any any ss collar patches or alike to even identify these men as SS though they are defiantly German.
One other point the bodies were searched/robbed/looted after death rather than before. Chances are they would of been searched before if they were executed.Last edited by byterock; 10-10-2007, 11:27 AM. -
There were a number of SS men executed on the spot at Dachau by US troops. This photo does look very similar to the main shooting.

What I love about this site is you learn something new every day.
I have read a number of accounts of the liberation but never came across this level of summary executions.

You can see the same NCO in both pics so I stand 100% corrected as this was the Coal Yard Incident. I have heard of this one but never knew there were any pics. I guess I should stop reading official histories.

This one always causes controversy.
There is a book out there whom some say the numbers of SS murdered by US troops is too high. I have the NARA records on this matter and it does admit to some killings of SS personnel but not to the extent of the book mentioned above (sorry I forget the title.)
There were beatings of SS personnel by liberated prisoners allowed to happen by the US troops. There were also executions like the one pictured above, as well as the SS officer who went out to meet the US troops...gunned down by the liberators.
Keep in mind that these SS killed just happened to be the hapless folks who took over the surrender after the camp guards fled.
As stated, there is a lot of controversy over this because as you know, all of us Americans would never murder any unarmed prisoners.

I don´t understand why you are so surprised!?
This wasn´t the only POW murder by US troops!
But I don´t blame them. God knows I don´t like what they did, but I can understand that they did it.
And I don´t think they knew the difference between Waffen-SS soldiers and the campguards. To be honest, I think that they would have killed ordinary WH troopers, too, had they captured them in that camp.
I guess that is how we react in a situation like that; revenge!Comment

The entire incident was recorded by a US Signal Corps photographer, including Lt.Col. Sparks kicking over the machine gunner. I have a copy of one of the photos autographed by one of the US soldiers standing there. Train siding tracks were behind the US soldiers.Comment
