    Military Dogs

I came across an article that talked about dogs in service in WWII. I am aware of the U.S. training dogs but did any other countries do the same? How about tha germans? Does any one have any photos to show of soilders and their fighting dogs.

The Russians made extensive use of dogs. There are the well known "Mine dogs" where a dog became an A/T mine on legs, plus they were used to pull carts in teams to haul wounded men. They also used them to sniff out wounded men.

    Cheers, Ade.

The German did indeed use dogs. Up here in North Norway they had a unit called Feldhundstaffel 550 which in May '45 had a strength of 50 men and 45 dogs. I believe the unit trained and supplied dogs\handlers to other units and installations for guard duties.

The Germans also used both pigeons and dogs as messengers. They even made use of dog sleds.

Sorry for the poor quality. This is a quick shot I took a few years ago just for "inventory". The photo and urkunde are now packed away, and not readily available. At some future point I will be digging them out to do better shoots. They really look much better in person. I also did these with the lessor equipment that I had a few years back. I got these in Germany in the mid-70s. "Rolf" and his handler........and the award certificate for "Rolf's" delivering needed blood in battle.

That is a great shot. I hope there are some others with examples.

Here's a photo I got many years ago. Picked it up at a flea market in Mainz.
