No big mystery. Towards the end of the war lots of surplus sailors were put into land units to fight as regular infantry ( all sailors did basic infantry training to begin with after recruitment and before going on to specailised naval training). Not just Cremer, but other top U-Boat aces like Hardegen, went on to command such units ( Hardegen served in 2 Marine Infanterie Division at the end of the war).

Cremers U-Boat men were formed into a tank hunting battalion which achieved considerable success against British armour in the closing days of the war around the Hamburg area.

Very little has been written about these late war naval land units .

Were there any other tank hunter units formed out of Kriegsmarine members? Are any members of the Marine- Panzervernichtungs-Bataillon Cremer still alive?

        Best regards/ Daniel
