EK II Certificate 27th Sept 1929

          Hi Guys

Here is the earliest EK II certificate in my collection. Awarded to Josef Harmeling (a Goblet of Honour recipient), who was the Unteroffizier pilot of an Hs 123 flying with 4.(Schlacht)/LG2 in the Polish campaign. His aircraft was damaged 45% by AA fire on 27th September so this may relate to his award if he got the plane back on the ground. By the way, signature is Richthofen.

Harmeling was shot down and captured slightly wounded over England while flying a Bf 109 on 29th October 1940. By this time he was an Oberfeldwebel. In his interrogation after capture he said he had only returned to flying one week before, having been wounded. I'm not sure if these were wounds received in the Polish incident or subsequently. Nevertheless a lucky fellow I think!

Research suggests he was shot down by Sgt Maciejowski of 249 Squadron RAF.

Harmeling's plane subsequently went on display around the UK to raise war funds - I'll post some pictures.

          best wishes
          Tm O.

                          September 1939 EK2

Here is a nice variation on the EK2 award certificate from 1939. This one is dated 25th September 1939 and inscribed on the back that the award was presented by Generalfeldmarscall Goring.

Can't believe we haven't added to this thread in over 5 years! So since my contribution got deleted a few years back (I believe during the server upgrade), here it is again.
