The close up above discloses another anomoly. Notice the umlaut in führer. It appears to me that this was done on a non German font typewriter. Notice the " is superimposed upon the u character. This might indicate the use of the guotation character " typed over the u.

I would be interested in hearing from Messers Jay and Mike to rebut the alarms raised by the members posting subsequent to their stated opinions.

Good catch, Ramon. A dreadful fake all around.
Reminds me of my first purchase of fake documents at a flea market in Frankfurt in the early 80's. I had money to burn in my pocket and I saw a dealer wave off a guy trying to sell him a batch of documents. I chased the guy down and asked how much. I bought them on the spot and a half-hour later when I was riding the train to another city, my vision cleared and all the obvious bad points jumped out at me. Boy, did I feel stupid!!
I have kept those documents though as a reminder of my stupidity. This SS document falls into that category for sure.

            Perhaps an interesting tidbit:

The certificate lists 1./SS-Pi.SS-VT. So my guess would be that the alleged unit should be the first company of the SS-Pionierbataillon "Dresden".

According to Otto Weidinger's "Division Das Reich - Der Weg der 2. SS-Panzerdivision 'Das Reich' " 1937 the company was commanded by Hauptsturmführer Heinz Lammderding.

Maybe the fabricator will get that part right on the next try, Folkert...

Etc.), but no luck yet- First name either Rolf or a scrunched-up Rudolf, surname begins with a "B" but I can't make out the rest. Looking for "B"-named officers of that rank who served as Pioniere in the SS-VT on John Moore's "Fuhrerliste der Waffen-SS" but am coming up empty-handed.

Anyone can be skunked at first glance. But there is a lesson here in taking 2 or 3 more looks before judging an item as good or bad.

I'm just interested in their observations and reasons why they both thought this was a genuine piece. No underlying motive intended.

I'm questioning no one person's motives. I do question the Mr. Miller "no question about it" comment. Neither gentleman appeared to examine closely the evidence provided. Smacks of hubris.

The goal on this forum is to determine the historical truth.
I think we achieved that in the case of this document. Along the way a couple of people ended up with egg on their face. I don't know either person well enough to know if that is well deserved or not. It would be honorable if they owned up to their mistake, but rubbing the egg around on their face isn't likely to produce a positive result.
