    LW standarte (photo) opinions please?

    Hi,

Picked this one up from schwarzweissfotos on ebay the other week. Was advertised as "LW Standarte" which im assuming is Luftwaffe and standarte being the flag their holding. Can anyone give me any other information about the photo? (i dont suppose anyone knows what that big arrow in the background is for?)

Also, i've been meaning to ask this for a while now, please forgive me for my lack of knowledge! but whats the deal with "photo postcards"?

I never knew this photo was in postcard format on the back when i bought it, but i've seen loads of other photos for sale as "photo postcards" Was it commonplace back then to have photos developed as postcards? or are these simply postcards people could have bought in a shop?

Here's the photo, the back side is plain apart from the "Agfa" written in the middle

    Thanks for looking

Quick answer: Yes photo postcards were very common in this period for personal photos. If it was a commercial post card there would have been some kind of writing on the card explaining the picture etc.

5th, Nice photo! I was looking at that myself.

You are correct about the Luftwaffe standarte. If I am not mistaken these flags were the Regimental flags, used for parades, ceremonies, inspections and for the oath, etc...

The arrow is actually a neon sign that blinks on and off and says "Eat at Joe's" when it is dark!

Here is a Luftwaffe standarte at an inspection ceremony.

Thanks for the reply Mark much appreciated. I need to get a scanner, the photo i've taken of it doesn't really do it justice, the actual photo is sharper.

              Hello 5thElement

              Nice photos.
I thought I would add some pics to your thread showing the Luftwaffe Standart. I don't know the location or the unit the Standart belonged to.
I will shortly start another thread with more pics and hopefully someone will be able to help me out.

              Cheers
              Larry

Nice flag Mike! really does look something special!

Making me think the flag in my photo might be different though, hmm, here's a close up, not exactly the greatest angle/view of the flag in the first place! but i think it might be a little different, like it might of had an iron cross in the middle rather than an eagle? i guess there was different flags though. Any opinions?

                          Iron Cross

No, it's the same flag. The Luftwaffe eagle appears on one side and the Iron Cross on the other.

                          See photo below.

Makes sense now beautiful flag. Out of interest how much would an item like that cost?
