Now this is great history. A few photos and one can see how varied were the roles and duties of the Ordnungspolizei from 1933 to 1945. Everything from criminal patrol, civil duties, occupation duties to even combat.

    These are very interesting!

Thanks for your responses thus far.

    Mark

        Hi Hans:
Thank you for confirming my ID of the Adler as a Diplomat.

May I say that I think technically we are both correct in our description of the car. It is, of course, a striefenwagen but as far as I can see it is being used here as either a carrier for the deceased or as a flower car but in any case as a funeral car.

        Maybe a fine point

        Bill

          Hello Guys,

I am glad you all like the photo's. What the unit is concerning: From August 1941 this the Polizeibataillon 72 was stationed in Marburg/Drau. It seems like this is somewhere in Germany. Perhaps a German member can help me out. I can't see, how he could be KIA in Germany at that time. Perhaps a bomber attack?

            Hi neckar!

Those are outstanding photos . Thanks for posting them.

Here's some background information on your policeman.

res.Pol.Btl.72 was stationed in the province of Südsteirmark, part of Gau Steiermark. The province, previously part of Kingdom of Yugoslavia, was annexed (though only unofficially) to the Germany and is today part of Slovenia.

            Now to the action:

According to a German report, Gendarmerieposten Trifail (Trbovlje) was on 5 January 1942 alerted of the presence of a 10-man strong partisan group on a farm nearby and sent a Schupo company (from res.Pol.Btl.72) stationed in Trbovlje to investigate. Unaware of the upcoming danger partisans barricaded themselves in the barn but left three sentries outside. Once the Germans arrived the sentries alerted the partisans in the barn and then managed to run away. The remaining partisans soon became surrounded (in the barn) but refused to surrender and continued resisting. During the initial fighting the policemen suffered their only loss - Fw.d.R. Josef Krauss, who was shot 3 times and subsequently died. Afterwards the Germans burnt down the barn, what ended the fighting as all the remaining partisans burnt in it. The 3 partisan survivors were killed four days later in another incident involving the same Schupo company. Both battles were eligible for the Infantry Assault badge.

            Best Regards
            Marko

              Hello Marko,

Unbelieveble that a date and a name on a cross, could provide that much information. I am very happy that herewith my photo's are going to "live" after so many years.

I put your story with the photo's. Very good that these historical facts are now attached to the photo's!!

Thank you for your research and information.

              Best regards,
              Erich

                Hello

I thought I would post some more photos in the series of the crashed Tatra T52 and fatality and also the crashed Horch 500 B car for those who have not seen them before.

First one showing Polizei equipment including a cap, helmet, belt and possibly pants, bayonet and rifle. These probably belonged to the deceased officer.

Here are a few that came it today. The writing on the back indicates that they are from a Polizei unit getting ready for the 1936 Olympic Games.

There are some trucks in there too Larry!

2 Not a high quality photo, but they must have gone to Berlin from another area for additional duties, as they have suitcases with them. As an interesting side note - the same thing was done here in St. Louis, Missouri for the 1904 Worlds Fair. Police Officers from Kansas City, Missouri (and I am sure other Departments) came to bolster the force. Unfortunately three Officers were killed in one incident during the Fair, in a gunfight with train robbers!
