Woman P.O.W.

I noticed the female Soviet POW like Mark did. If you notice, she is trying to walk around a puddle of muddy water while all the rest including the German soldier are about to walk through it. You can put a woman in uniform, but she is still a woman.

On the back of the photo it says "Flintenweib!" which bodes evil for the poor woman.

Hi Mark, the rank tabs although similar to the SS pattern are not the same. The rank tabs were worn on both collars. The Volksturm had their own rank system. I do not have my books to hand at the moment, but I will post a fuller answer later if no one else jumps in with the info?

The Volkssturm officer is a 'Bataillonsführer' , four pips on either side. I would guess the equivelant of a heer major or perhaps hauptmann.

Some very interesting photos. Is this the backside of picture #6 or another picture ? I recentely sold a Wehrpass of a guy that died in that place, February 1942. I would be interested seeing a picture of the place he was killed.
