Well the Canadian Postal Service was most unhelpfull. They got most offended when I suggested that one of their workers might be corrupt. All in all, I filled out a "complaint" over the phone which is going to go to the "Investigations" branch. So I'm might hear something back in 6 months...haha.
They also said that they can't do anything else and that the sender is going to have to fill out a report so that there could be some compensation. My friend is going to flip when he finds out the picture could have been worth 300 dollars

I had a RAD dagger that went "missing" through Canada Post. I filed a complaint and initiated a investigation and low and behold, the piece showed up! Their story was that the parcel must have opened up and the piece fell out and was placed into lost and found. My job at that time was shipping parcels across Canada and I can tell you that the parcel would have passed any drop test, but it would not have passed the box knife test! Good luck on it!

      Cheers,
      James

          Sorry to hear

Sorry About your luck Stoneage, A good friend of mine is about to retire from the post office, and when I asked him a while ago about problems with Canada post, he told me thats why he has an american postal box over the river in Lewiston , and from what ive seen of his co-workers I understand why you cant trust anything.

If I ever see it turn up ill let you know.

So what is the best way to send a large parcel overseas. I live in the US and need to send some clothes, 10 DVDs books and a child's electronic toy overseas.
Should I send it in one large parcel or smaller parcels, just to make sure that at least one of them gets there?

I was told that anything over 4 LBS cannot be registered, but I feel that registered mail is safest.
            Should I insure the mail?
            What is your advice?

If you can stomach the costs, FedEx would be a fairly secure option. The package is not in the system very long and it's barcoded all the way.

Thanks for the reply Peter. Yeah, I thught about it, but found out that the fedex cost would triple the cost of the contents.

Registered mail then? Although, to be honest, I don't know if having the final recipient sign for the package is any security against lightfingered postal or customs workers along the route, so maybe registered mail is a waste of money if pilfering is the concern.

Send it in smaller lots as you suggested, so that you're at least highly unlikely to lose all the stuff. Stuff gets 'lost' occasionally but surely it can't be all *that* common in a country like Canada.

                  Can it?

remember too that all it takes is once for a dishonest postal employee to find out that you have valueable militaria coming to the same address every time. it would be almost irresistable to them..
