Execution of WH General by U.S. Troops

Interesting photo of a Wehrmact General being prepared for execution.

Does anyone know what this photo is about? Who is the general and why is he about to be shot?

Sorry I can't identify your photo, but it is interesting to note that the chaplain appears to be speaking to an enlisted man who is acting as an interpreter.
The Officer appears to be very focussed on his imminent fate.
Very interesting. I hope someone can help you.
    Regards,
    RAY.

      German General Identification

      Greetings John!

The general is Anton Dostler former commander of the 75th Army Corps. He was tried in Rome, Italy for ordering the execution of 15 American soldiers near the town of LaSpezia, Italy on 26 March 1945. He was executed on 13 December 1945 at Aversa, Italy.

      Best regards,
      Bill

One of the most poignant photos I've seen so far, very haunting. General Anton appears to be resigned to his fate

            Greetings Matt!
You ought to see the ones where he is actually being tied to the post, the hood is placed over his head, the aiming dot is pinned to his uniform, the bullets are ripping through his body and then his body is being removed from the post.

            Best regards,
            Bill

              Greetings John!

It helps when you have the war time press release photos to refer to. No way I could have remembered all of those details. At my age I was lucky enough to remember I had the photos!

              Best regards,
              Bill

I suggest you obtain issue 94 of After the Battle magazine. A large portion of this issue is dedicated to telling of Dostler's arrest, trial and execution. As is normally the case with ATB, there are many pictures along with then and now comparisons.

                Cheers,

                Ramon

                  Greetings Ramon!

Thanks for that information. I have just about all of the mags and will see if I can find that one to go along with the photos I have.

                  Best regards,
                  Bill

Looks like his badges, medals, patches, etc. have already been stripped...
