Have you ever seen the news footage of his execution? They have images of it on:
      http://www.buyoutfootage.com/pages/t...pd_nr_128.html
but the images are too small to see enough detail.

It makes you wonder why Dostler was allowed die a soldier's death at a firing squad, and why wasn't Goering, Keitel and Jodl allowed the same honour to die in that way.

Actually, it's rather easy to answer. The Dostler case involved a US Military tribunal. The Nuremburg IMT was largely presided over by civilian entities. Moreover, the larger issues of the 4 major counts the defendants were variously accused of involving crimes against humanity, waging aggressive warfare and the like, obviated the use of the 'honorable' firiing squad method of execution. The prevailing mood of the day would not allow any honor to be attached to the Nazi defendants even in death.

Also, the Dostler case was over and done with before the full enormity of the Nazi aggression was presented to the world via the trial in Germany.

This is a very interesting topic. I alway felt that Jodl should have been spared the death penalty. I believe quite a few allied military leaders were also not aproving of his execution.

Yes, I have seen the film of the execution. Actually, I think I have it on an old video I recorded off TV some years back.

Is there any possibility that you take some images of it, as the images on the Buyout Footage site are rubbish, and not really good detail.

I really don't know how I could do it. It's on a video, and I have absolutely NO idea how to make images from it to post here. By the way, I did watch it last night, after I looked at the photos on Buyout, and since there are some scenes in "buyout" that are not in the film I watched, my film is obviously a shortened version than what was originally made. Is one able to purchase the film on video or DVD from Buyout? When I looked at that site, it seemed so. If you could, they may have the complete footage.

Also, the excerpt I have is actually part of an hour long documentary made in the 1960s on the Nuremberg Trials by David L. Wolper.

Yeah they sell a DVD-R Preview Disc (NTSC) for $35.00, and it includes his execution plus some other news reel stuff.

                      Skorzeny's men shot...

A "last request":I have always thought it particularly sad that Skorzeny's men awaiting the firing squad were given a last request while awaiting execution. They requested some German pow nurses to sing them Christmas songs from home that night-which was granted.

Keitel and Jodl were included amongst the list of major defendants at the Nuremberg Tribunal because of the insistance of Stalin that they be there. Stalin initially wanted the whole General Staff executed. Of course, not much compares to Stalin's purge of his own officer corps prior to the war.

Concerning the sentences of Jodl and Keitel, I would suggest those interested consult the excellent 2 works authored by Bradley F. Smith, The Road to Nuremberg and Reaching Judgement at Nuremberg.

The latter title uses the heretofore unknown trial notes of Judge Francis Biddle.
The deliberation debates for each defendant are laid out and make for compelling reading.

With one of the photos of Anton Dostler being bound to the post, why have they only tied rope round his boots, knees? Also what is the Wehrmacht uniform he is wearing, and why has his medals, and insignia been removed?

                              MajorKarl,

His hands were securely tied behind the post he was pilloried to. He wasn't going anywhere. The uniform was striped of any vestige of NS related insignia as well as his medal as he was a prisoner who faced criminal charges. There as little honor accorded to him other that he was permited to keep his rank insignia and was given the firing squad rather than the rope.
