Correct.....my War Dept German Military Dictionary states the Spiess was the "Top Sergeant"...Top Kick" equivalent of being the First Sergeant on the US Army side. Bill

I'm not going to let this thread die yet! I have two Spiess photos that I will post tomorrow afternoon But I'm going to have to admit that even after a year of collecting and trying hard to work it out I still have not been able to work out what the Hell der Spiess is? I have a recollection it is to do with NCO training?? I havent asked before because its embarrasing and I just cant find it out, but as I have two pictures of them I might as well ask!

Actually, upon closer inspection I now wonder if that is a Der Spieß? I only see one piston ring on his sleeve, not two. It looks like he is also wearing the officer candidate stripes on his shoulder boards as well.
