Great pics...Bill, those pics of Prien and U-47 are rare, esp the candid shot of Prien in the conning tower wearing his scrungy "underway" uniform.

Some information on photos

The first photo of U-47 would be consistent with the dates of the 8 patrol based on the conning tower modifications visible which were made in the Oct - Nov 1939 refit. The color at that time was believed to be dunkelgrau 51.

Pictures 2, 3 and 5 show the conning tower modifications after the July - August 1940 refit and the color was now schlickgrau 58.

Picture 4 of the boat in dry dock is not the 47 boat ( a type VII B ) but looks like a type IX boat from the pattern of the limber holes.

Great pics. I hope they don't disappear from site now.
