Hi Bill,

In photo 5962, the soldier has the EK I, but where is his EK II ribbon? Was wearing the EK II ribbon optional after a soldier earned the EK I?

If I may? He is wearing it but as a ribbon bar together with a flower war October 1'st on the right.

Correct, but regulations stated they were not to be worn together. This was often ignored.

I guess the wearing of any medal really is optional, which is why you will often see EK1s and no EK2 ribbon.

The October 1st medal is for those who participated in the occupation of the Sudentenland.

Called the flower war due to the flowers the civilians would bring the German soldiers.
