          Bill,

How was Normandy ? I have heard the cemetery at Omaha beach is quite special.

                      Mike,

That was my third trip to Normandy. The Colleville sur mer American Military Cemetary is something that everyone needs to visit and see. A very somber and impressive sight to see. There was a rather large ceremony going on at the time of our visit....Senator Carey in attendance. So I took a few people along to some of my favorite spots at Omaha Beach....the 1st ID memorial which is very close to the German Pillboxes and MG positions overlooking the Beach. You get a very good perspective of what the German Soldiers saw when the the GI's were coming out of their Landing Craft. It was low tide so you can imagine how far they had to crawl & run under fire to get to the seawall which basically is a sand dune along the five mile stretch of Omaha beach. Going down to the Beach you can look up and only see the pillboxes....not the MG Positions and trenches that were scattered all over the top of the hill. The GI's had to climb up that steep hill through barbwire and mines and continous enemy fire in order to attack those positions. You get a great sense of what had to be done and why so many died in the attempt. Over 3,000 casualties that morning just on Omaha Beach alone.

                          Mike,

Of course you have to visit many of the other locations as well....we went to the British and Canadian Beaches (Juno, Sword)....Pegasus Bridge, Mullbury Harbor at Arromanches, Merville Batteries, Sainte Mere Eglise, Pointe Du Hoc, Utah Beach just to name a few that we visited.
