    Major Dr. Altenburg

Seeking data on a Major Dr. Josef Altenburg, FP#00821 thru 1943. I believe a surgeon. Thanks in advance for any help.

That is a Sammelfeldpostnummer, thus unless you have the single or double letter suffix assigned to his unit, it is impossible to be certain which unit he belonged to.

Sammel-FpN 00821 had its distribution center in Lüttich (Liège) in Belgium from 1942 thru 1944. It cover some 24 different units. Assuming Altenburg was a Dr. med., the only unit among the 24 that had a medical connection appears to be the Heeres-Erholungsheim Laroche. This would have been a convalescent home where wounded were sent after leaving the hospital. I do not know off hand where Laroche was, but it's probably near Liège.

On the other hand, Altenburg could have been a Dr. jur., or a Dr. phil., or a number of other possibilities.

      Thank you, BHS

Okay, the FP# is 00821N. I am pretty sure this guy is a medical officer. His son was a Fahnenj. Uffz. at the MilitarArzt Akademie in Berlin, and was killed in the big raid on Berlin on Nov. 23, 1943.

There is an Obstlt Altenburg in the 1944 Rank list,
no first name and not a Dr etc, also a Major Altenburg
who won the DkiG as an Inf officer.
        Regards Harmel

Yes, but that was Hans Altenburg (Artillery) so could be family, but not the same man as this one.

O.K., 00821N is Ortskommandantur (B) 687, and that would be a might odd assignment for an M.D. I don't know where it was, but probably in Liège or the Liège area. Ortskommandanturen were concerned with legal matters, not medical activities. They wrote, negotiated, executed and supervised contracts with local manufacturers, suppliers, producers and vendors for equipment, real estate and comodities purchased by the Wehrmacht. That would probably make him a Dr. jur. and not an M.D.

              Hi Jessee,

I checked all German and Austrian library catalogues and I did not find a published thesis from a DR. Altenburg.

That's strange because they should have been published.

Are you sure that Josef Altenburg was a "Dr." ?
