[QUOTE=Chris]Just a note of clarification on C-14 (Radio Carbon) dating. Advancements in the technology have made much greater precision in dating available than was previously possible. While precise C-14 dating is difficult for objects made between about 1700 and 1900 CE, because of natural changes in radio carbon, dating objects made after 1950 CE is particularly easy because of the greatly increased levels of C-14 in the atmosphere resulting from nuclear testing. Compared to an object made before 1950, the object made after 1950 will be practically off the meter in C-14. (See, there's a silver lining in every cloud, as my Mom used to say: Nuclear proliferation is good, because it allows us to date Nazi relics. Who knew?)

Um, I was wondering about C-14, does the increased level of C-14 after 1950's still affect the C-14 content of those objects made before 1950? Because if they're affected, then the C-14 content of the pre-50's could be corrupted. (But hopefully not, so C-14 will work ).

      Dear Chris,

I have no contention with you or wish to denounce your findings this a bit of 'funny thread'.....but there is a distinct difference in an alloy and ore, ore being preliminary so to speak. An ore is an mineral or aggregate, an alloy is a mixing of two/one 'metals' or metalic elements with non metalic elements.

Ore determination is great for 'Iron age' sword but not an TR badge.

RCD is not an effective trial in this case, there are more productive means of testing which can age material's within 5 (five) years (not a premise in all cases, I won't state that), noteablely 'paper' without any damage to to article. Incipient usage of this was used to determine the paper 'age' of documents that 'fell' into the Wests hands to denounce defectors.....it's come a long way since those days.

In the case of an award you'll have the 'base' metal then the wash, or 'finishing' which only adds to the confusion.

In around about way........not 'conjecture' based

I researched this a few years ago. It might work on EK's because of the paint. Might, depends on the composition of the paint. I don't think this will work on a metal badge.

          Chris,
How about you get in contact with somewhere that can perform C14 carbon dating and ask them about getting a badge or medal dated?
I'd love to hear what they tell you.

Hopefully I was told completely wrong information when I made the same enquiries a couple of years ago and that there is a chance we can relatively easily resolve the "real or repro" debate.
Somehow I think I'm still going to be disappointed.

I think I remember someone else buying this... but I may be mistaken..

What is interesting-again if memory serves- is that during this time the price increased about 2k. ..

                  All the best
