The hinge and catch are both attached to mounting plates, presumably to afford more surface area for soldering, since the zinc doesn't take solder as well as the higher quaility materials used on the earlier badges. From a strictly practical standpoint, I think the fact that zinc was quite brittle and didn't take solder well are probably two reasons the swastikas weren't cut out on the zinc badges. Because of the size and location of the catch mounting plate, it would probably show from behind if the swaz was cut out while the arms of the swaz would have proven to be quite fragile.
