GWL Pilot Badge vs Juncker Pilot Badge

I would like to get a Pilot Badge. I have the following questions:-
    1. Would you prefer a GWL or Juncker J3? (I know this question is very personal)
    2. Are GWLs rarer than Juncker J3? (which makes the prices of GWL more expensive than those of Juncker J3)
    3. Does GWL have early vs late war version, which differ in weight and/or design whatsoever?
    4. What is the usual weight of a GWL pilot badge.

Looking forward to my learned friends' replies.

Although the GWLs are more scarce (I think the word rare is overused), and can be very beautiful badges, especially when in mint condition...I prefer the early Junckers. More specifically the Juncker J1s and J2s. I don't like the J3s, but that is just a preference. To me the execution of the eagle and wreath imagery on the Junckers (esp the J2) is exceptional, and superior to the GWL. The Junckers develop a very pleasing patina as well. You will pay more for a GWL though...

What about the weight of GWL? Is it only of 1 standard weight? Or is it like the Juncker, which is of different weight depending upon the period of production?

While I don't place a lot of emphasis on badge weights unless they start getting way out of wack, the average of the 4 GWL pilot's badges I own is 44.9 grams. They vary from the worn example at 44.3 to the mint example at 45.1. The GWL PO comes in above the average weighing 49.0.

Junckers are nice but I much prefer the exquisite finishes that the gwl company made. So I would go with the gwl.
          best wishes,

            Dear David,

As you stated, choosing a pilot badge for one's collection is very much a personal choice. GWLs (which are harder to find then Juncker badges) have a wonderful (and retain) finish, probably the best in any of the Luftwaffe badge series. Junckers, IMO, don't have that great a finish and acquire a patina which gives them that "60 year old" look, if you know what I mean.

If you could only have one pilot badge in a collection then I would have to go with Juncker, but a J1 or J2 (J3s designs are the least appealing of the Pilot badges with the thick legs etc). Most would agree that Junckers are the "Cadillac" of Luftwaffe badges.

              GWL or Juncker

              Hello David,
This is really up to personal tastes. It is like U-boat badges some folks like Schwerin Berlin and other prefer Mayer, Juncker, etc. There are many pretty things about the GWL Pilot's badge, but I do not like their hinges, catches and rivets on them.

I agree with Andy and Gary, the Junckers have a lot of beauty to them.

I vote for Juncker. Here is my cased J2 pilots badge.

              Regards,
              Jody

Again, realizing that the only real reason to purchase either is purely personal choice, the consumate makers are Juncker for Luftwaffe and Schwerin for Kriegsmarine. When it comes to the Heer badges, there is a little more leeway.

So for me, the choice would be an easy one...Juncker - although I tend to gravitate toward the earlier vintage pieces.

Personally, I wouldn’t worry about the problem of which maker to buy as you’ll have both within a pretty short time….such is the way of collecting; how many times have we heard ‘I’m only going to collect one of each type of qualification badge and leave it at that’.
Once that bug bites, it’ll be: Got a Juncker/GWL and a Deumer…Oh, no! Assmann, BSW, <ST1OM</ST1, B&NL…1st/2nd/3rd patterns…and on, and on!
                  <O
The question should be: Do I really want to get into collecting, or should I keep my sanity intact?
                  <O
But, if you are really only going to acquire one (yeah, right) pilot’s badge, and the choice is out of Juncker & GWL…..Juncker it would have to be…but which pattern?
                  <O
                  And….what about Assmann?
                  <O
                  Or…Deumer?
                  <O
                  Or…B&NL?

                  :-)
                  <O
                  Warmest Regards ... John

I would go with Juncker if had to choose between the two. I only have one Pilot badge in my collection and I went with a Deumer.

If I could only keep one.....(God forbid),

I'd keep the badge with the most "personality"!

But we all have our reasons and opinions.

I really like my GWL & Junckers, but my Bruderschneider AG Wien is very nice as well.

While my personal favorite is GWL, I can't deny that the J2 eagle looks like he's ready to open a can of whoop ass anytime. J3's just don't do much for me and rafe only above FLL on my personal list of favorites.

My favourite is a J1 with "open legs". But I also like the Assmann eagle - it also has an evil look in the eyes...
