Both the hinge and hook are crimped into the badge in the same way on all these badges plus they all have flat east and west sides to the top of the pin where it goes into the hinge.

    Hi Chris,

I need to see some images. I cannot base any logical conclusions with textual explanations. Please show me what you are talking about.

You aren't the only one Mark. A picture says 1000 words

If it doesn't have a hinge and catch, I'm not interested......well, maybe a little

Here is a photo of one I have that may illustrate what he's talking about. Although it's a bit hard to make out, the pin is flattened on the sides as it nears, and goes into, the ball-hinge.

OK guys as soon as I get a chance I will arrange to get some images of my one posted and hopefully if they come out clearly some comparative shots with the other badges I am talking about.

As Tom says "picture = 1000 words" and gains more interest

The one I have returned June 1945, has the exact same hinge and flattening of the pin as that shown.

Well. What did he base that comment on? It implies that we have an established 1st style, too!

                    Completely without any foundation.

I must state here that I am in no way trying to have a go at Stijn. I have the up most respect for his collection, book, research and the balanced way he is handling this debate. He is a pleasure to discuss this with and I too am enjoying what is being shared here.

What I am trying to do here, is to make sure you are all fully informed of what I saw and what I discovered. This I feel is an important finding and evidence of pre-May 45 existance in the on-going debate about these ball hinge glider badges.

I could just shut up and not dare question the author of such a fine work on the subject but that is both not my nature and no help to anyone esp. Stijn in trying to understand this ball hinged type. In fact it is a shame many who I know do not contribute more to this forum. Some of them who have collected for 50 odd years now may also have a vet example of this badge. These are the people we now need to come forward plus the photos as many here state.

The veteran who I got my badges from did not in any way sneak a glider badge in amongst the others. I know the situation to which you are referring to but can assure you by swearing on the bible this is not one of those cases.

He was a very modest man whose health was failing due to having been a prisoner of war taken in the battle of Crete. He was selling stuff because he was not far away from going into long term care at a rest home and his wife was going to move into a small self contained low manitence unit. They did not have the room for all their stuff any more and approached an antique dealer to sell some of the more valuable & beautiful items. The dealer was embarassed by the Nazi items and refused to have such items in his shop but contacted me to see if I was interested or could find a buyer.

When I went to see this charming old couple, they made me a real cup of tea while we talked a little about the war and the terrible things he had seen in a war and why I would have any interest in such things. He did not really say much but a little due to the fact he did not want to talk about it and his poor health. His wife then went out to the shed were he had breed budgies in his younger days and produced a box with the badges. His wife did not like them being in the house and they had spent their life since the war in that bird shed. He apologised to me for even bringing them back and said he should not have done it because it was against the rules of the New Zealand army and he could have got into big trouble for it.

Now these are hardly the actions of a boostful bragging man who is going to sneak a glider badge in with his other to impress and no other collector had ever seen them. Only the antique dealer and myself. Even his own children had only very rarely ever been allowed to see them and his wife told me that she had been very strict that they were never ever taken to school by them. She did not think it was right to have them.

Anyway this is my finding and I state hear with all certainity that my ball hinge glider was with the other badges when they were all obtained from that LW base in 1945.

                      With best regards, Chris

And what is wrong with that ?

This is exactly what happened when I first meet this couple and is how I got the last 5 badges after getting the ones from Barry in the shop.

Do you want me to go into more details about how he was in wheel chair, on god knows how many pills a day and needed help going to the toilet which she was struggling with

Barry had endured some public critism over the badges, a Hitler bust, a party flag and other Third Reich items on display in his antique shop. The flag and bust etc had come from some where else and were not part of this lot but I know who bought the bust and he still has it. This is one of the reason why he was happy to put a deal to me for the lot if I let him have the Samurai sword in return which he had always wanted.

                          Not everybody thinks like you as in this letter "It's OK to sell, and wear, German war gear", published in the Southland Times on 12 Febuary 2016. There are people who get very up-set about Third Reich items being on display or worn by people today;

                          http://www.stuff.co.nz/southland-tim...r-gear--letter

I could not get a lot of detail from the veteran on that day except for him to confirm that all the badges had been brought back by him when he was liberated from the POW camp. I had to keep my visit short. Later on, when I asked if we could document his war service via my friend in the University, we had to visit him in the rest home when he was up to it. I visited him at the rest home more than once before he passed away,

It's a load of bollocks, certainly much different story than the one you cited yesterday.
As for Barry not wanting Nazi stuff in his shop, hell he encouraged it. In case you have forgotten he had signs up advertising for it.

I've been following your posts for years and reading all the bull**** you've written but I stayed my hand. Since all that crap trying to defend those Pink Smocks I just couldn't let you keep on digging a deeper hole for yourself.

Glad you have given my letter to the paper a world wide readership now and I can tell you it was watered down considerably from my my original copy.
It's true and I stand behind everything I wrote.

You are getting pathetic no you are pathetic trying dredge up everything you can find to throw against me.
It's a wonder you are not slagging off my Asian wife who used to cook you beautiful meals when you came down to our place.

Keep the fanciful stories coming so we can all have a laugh.

Well that is what happened when I first meet the veteran. After that, he was in the rest home and in care.

As far as Barry went with Third Reich items, he could run hot and cold over displaying them or not. They got put further and further down the shop over the years and in cabinets that you could only see by going in and asking him. He himself said, it was not worth having the front window broken. I struck him at a time then when he had taken some real flak over it which is why he put the deal to me. However he did certainly buy, sell and look for Militaria in general. Also, I did not want the world knowing how good some items he picked up could be and how I got on to them at that stage in case he got more.

It comes down to how much time people here, have got to read every detail about this verses what they really want to know. I am already criticised here on WAF for being too verbose on more than one occasion.

My reply is only responding to your ongoing and obsessed attacks on me plus showing that not everyone finds displaying Third Reich items in a shop a good experience. I have no malice towards any members of your family. That article is already in a public newspaper for anyone to find it,
