Adolf Glunz grouping in the next Hermann Historica Auction

One more time Hermann Historica is proposing an other Luftwaffe knights cross holder grouping for the next auction.
Starting price is 20.000 € for the fighter ace Adolf "Adi" Glunz's grouping...

    - Oak Leaves to the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross of 1939 stamped "800" and "21".
    - Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross of 1939 stamped "800".

    - presentation case
    - German Cross in Gold with maker's mark "1"
    - Iron Cross 1st Class of 1939 cased and 2nd Class

    - Pilot's Badge "B & N L"
    - Day Fighter Clasp in Gold
    - Sports Badge in Bronze (with miniature and cloth badge)
    - a pair of collar tabs and shoulder boards for an Oberleutnant of flying personnel.
    - some pictures of Adolf Glunz

The oak leaves are said to be in mint unworn condition (as the knights cross) as Glunz has sent them to his father just after having received them from Adolf Hitler himself.

Please note that I am not working with or for this auction house. The picture comes from the catalogue.

Out of my price range so I need to play the local lottery and hope to win it, or else I'll have to keep drooling over this nice grouping!

How much did the Rall grouping sell for in the last go round?

It looks put together to me with the signed photo's and newspapers and no award documents or album type photographs. Is there a chain of custody with this group? Rall's pilot badge was also a B&N.

These are the medals from Addi Glunz !
I compared those medals with a picture in which his medals (+goblet) were shown. They are exactly the same. His KC and oaks (+ cases) were in a pristine /mint condition. I was told by a fellow member who personally knew Glunz, that Glunz was so proud of those and kept his KC + oaks in excelent shape.

I only wonder where would the case for the oaks and his honor goblet be....And of course the paperwork. Probably split up and lost in time....

I agree! I would take it for no more than the face value of each item. With no award docs/photo album, I would hardly call anything a true grouping! Just my opinion!

This is a superb grouping which definate belonged to Addi Glunz.................

And heres the man, who had 72 claimed victories (most in the West)...without ever being shot himself.

Does it mean that B&N L is the fighter aces' choice...? I always knew that had excellent taste in badges.

I am trying to figure out the story. He got the RK in August 1943 and was acvtive until wars end end, The photo's show him wearing an RK. I would think that after 21 months of combat the RK would show some obvious wear and tear, yet this one is near mint. The EK1 certainly has gotten a beating. I can't see how he could wear it and end up with a pristine example. Based upon what I have read in the thread so far, I guess the story would be he sent the original award (and for sale) to his father as an honor and perhaps safekeeping and had one or more for active service?

I can't remember off the top of my head but believe that Dietrich makes the assertion that the RK and higher grade add-ons became controlled early on in the game. You could not go to your local vendor and buy another as they were allowed only one for display as I recall. Most people are aware that Rudel had several copies of the oaks with swords and diamonds so maybe he sent the original home and wore a different set day to day?

I would think that as the provenance of the grouping is important and would bring a premium, perhaps better documentation or a chain of custody would be provided.

Thanks for the additional photo's. Certainly are nice awards. I would love to hear more about his awards if you have anything else to share. The oaks are gorgeous.

The rk w oaks on the card and the one for sale do not look the same to me.

I can't afford groups like this but Glunz was a Top Gun in Jg26. Documents would sure add to the provenance. I was interested in the thread as I have a USAAC B-17 pow group and Glunz is the one that shot the plane down. At least Glunz got credit as the B-17 was hit by flak and then finished off by fighters.

                          I disagree with you.

I marked some spots with some identical marks, but you can also clearly see several dark-light spots/areas.

He wore another set of oaks (poor quality) and most probably also another KC.
