    Souval? KRIEGSMARINE BADGE.

    I'm fairly new to medal collecting and I have this badge. I understand that this maker did some post-war work as well. How does it discern from war time pieces and is this one making the cut? Thank you!

    Or can anyone point me to a great thread on the matter?

      Hi msams,

      That's a "wartime-compatible" Souval but likely refinished by Souval/Umlauf in the 1960s. Here the discussion on an Auxiliary Cruiser badge with the same finish:

      Can you show a better photo of the catch?

      Best regards,
      ---Norm

        I say it´s a wartime Souval badge but the finish don´t looks to be original. It´s refinished postwar

          Here are some better photos. Question as a novice of these... does the potential post war treatment completely ruin the piece value wise?;

            The catch is correct for a "wartime compatible" badge.

            I preface my comments with I'm not a great judge of market values, but I'd say in this case the refinishing probably doesn't change value much since a) the refinishing was likely by Souval/Umlauf in their own shop and b) most Souval KM badges already carry the stigma of poor construction and large numbers of post-war leftovers. It's still a decent "starter" badge for display on a uniform.

            Best regards,
            ---Norm

              Thank you immensely for your response Norm. I have to admit that I'm extremely intrigued to find out more about this and the Souval story. It seems like there is a bit of a poetic story behind picking up where you left off after the war that sets it apart from the flat out replicas made by people still in diapers when the third Reich was in full swing.
