Is this a pre 45 or was this one made after the war by Souval?

Hi Ostmaerker,

No one can say for sure when the badge was produced but it shows what we tend to call "wartime compatible" construction, so it could be produced in wartime. There's no way to distinguish it from early post-war production. The gilding is controversial and even if the badge is wartime this one could have been regilded in the 1960's or 1970's as Souval/Umlauf did a lot of this. As a result you'll get various opinions ranging from "I wouldn't touch Souval with a 10-foot pole" to "Nice wartime-compatible example". It's certainly collectible to the right market.
