    Not at all Norm it is hand vaulted and the maker mark suffered in the process. It looks like a sailor hit it with hammer on both sides on the reverse where maker mark is located in order to make an arched shape. Due to that also the high spots on the obverse on both sides of the badge are slightly flattened.

      Ah, I couldn't see the vaulting from the views you showed but now that all makes sense. Thanks.

        Somewhat hard to imagine that the recipient would take a hammer to his badge, but probably occured more often than we realize. I always appreciate seeing the extremes a soldier would take to secure his badge/award. (extra clasp, screw-backs, etc)
