            Hi Guys,
It is very nice tombak Otto Schickle u-boat badge
This catch is not common on Schickle u-boats but on the other hand is very often found on Schickle tombak Destroyers.
I enclose two Schickle awards from my collection. First is u-boat but with more common Pforzheim-P sheet metal catch:

second is Destroyer with the same round wire catch as on the u-boat posted for opinion:

            Cheers,
            Hubert

              Thanks! check out this pocket...

Thanks for the feedback guys, all very much appreciated!

I bought this badge from John Telesmanich a few years ago and paid a lot of money for it, but I thought it was a great badge I'm really happy with it.

I'm displaying it in a frame alongside a model of, and some photos from, Heinrich Timm/U-862, who went around Australia and NZ and was the only U-boat to operate in the Pacific.

I've had this white tropical Kreigsmarine pocket made up for the display...

I might add that I've always been very happy with items purchased from John T. and never doubted that this was a good U-boat badge.

He just didn't have a lot of info on it at the time, so I thought I'd run it past the experts here

                      Hi Andy,

Not just close, actually the same. All the evidence suggests the Tombak badges previously called "Mayer" are all simply leftover Schickle stock, some of which Mayer acquired in 1941 and sold along side of their own very different L/18-marked zinc model.

                      Best regards,
                      ---Norm

P.S. Nice badge and display hookahiko!

                        Hi Andy,
                        Norm has said it all.
B.H. Mayer zinc u-boats have quite different design compared to Schickle tombak and zinc u-boats.
Same rule applies to Destroyers and Minesweepers. Mayer produced only in zinc and their zincers have different design than Schickle tombak and zinc awards.
                        Cheers,
                        Hubert

                              Mayer or Schickle?

This theme is also covered in Volume 3 of The Kriegsmarine Awards.
