That U-Boat Badge with diamonds were not hallmarked with the silver content is really only the same situation as Totenkopf rings produced by Otto Gahr andGau Wartheland badges produced by Souval.

Whilst Silver/gilt U-Boat badges with diamonds had almost identical dimensions to standard issue Schwerin tombak badges, they weighed considerably more (typical 30,5g compared to 24.5g). Typically Silver weighs 10-20% more than Tombak so this is how it should be.

Thanks for the info re the hallmarking. I wasn't aware it was not compulsory.

            Richard,

It is also the same for the Combined Pilot Observer Badge with Diamonds (award version) whereby the gold wreath is hallmarked "585" but the Platinum or White Gold eagle is unmarked.

Similarly the German Cross in Gold with diamonds made by Rath Munchen doesn't bear a silver hallmark.

              Platinum, not white gold

Here is an earlier post war Souval version of Admiral Doenitz’s U-Boat badge with Diamonds.
Souval’s version uses white sapphires instead of diamonds. The badge itself is made silver gilded (weight: 32g) and stamped 925.
The overall quality of this badge is fine. Especially the encrusted swastika looks really impressive in person.

Merten's badge, when sold by Herman Historica.
After many hours, I could get much better quality photos of this piece attributed to U-boat ace Merten.

Sometimes we don't get the chance to look at Dönitz's special Uboot badge, but in this photo is quite clear. The diamonds shaped all around the arc of this interesting piece.

An article posted by a Russian magazine/book about III Reich badges. Inside, a description of the U-boat award with diamonds.

Editor's note: See posts #88-89 for debunking of this badge.
