    Two KM Fake Badges...?

From the research I've done, I think these are fakes but would like a second opinion on them.

    Thanks in advance,

*NOTE* The pictures are over exposed (they appear lighter than they're supposed to - sorry!)

      Hi joshlichty,

Quite correct. Two reproduction badges. The first is a copy of the S&L !st Pattern S-Boat.

      Best regards,
      ---Norm

Both badges are indeed reproductions. The RS&S HSF fake continues to fool many (there have been a couple of threads dealing with this specific fake in the last couple of weeks). Everything is wrong with the E-boat badge - it looks like a soft casting based on the "crease" marls evident on the reverse, wrong hardware, fantasy MM (on KM badges), etc.

Evaluate the item, not the story and not the seller's reputation!

          Hi joshlichty,

Yes, the FAKE RS&S High Seas Fleet badge does indeed show up on the WAF regularly. Your example is one of the fakes as you already know.

The hinge on your badge being the most obvious problem as original RS&S had the ball point hinge.

Here is a thread below on the study of the RS&S High Seas Fleet badge.

          Hope this helps.

            Appricate the comments,

I suppose I was thrown off by the HSF because of this website:

            http://quanonline.com/military/milit...dges/seas3.php

I suppose the one they are show casing is also an RS&S fake... I did read that thread posted below on the ball point hinge which gave me my first idea it was fake.

I got a guarantee i could return these 100% from the owner (they came from a local antique store). I guess I was feeling a bit to good since finding an authentic SS Cap Skull at another store down the road.

Thanks again guys, shame my first experience with KM badges was negative, but alas I am 100% more educated.

              joshlichty,

I had a look at the link you provided. Thank you.

Below is a quote from the sales pitch.

"This award is currently being reproduced. It is becoming more difficult to be able to tell the fake ones from the real ones because the quality of the reproductions is improving. The collector must become familiarized with the construction style and materials employed in the manufacturing of this badge. Attention to the details is critical in order to be able to determine the authenticity of the badge."

                Dragon,

Perhaps I paid to much "attention to the details" of their fake they are showing - how ironic. It's unfortunate, b/c they have a really nice website that is very user friendly. But now I will question everything I see on it.

Its astonishing how easy it is to lose a good reputation. Makes me appriciate the sites/people with good reputations that have been able to keep them for quite some time.

I emailed them and they were very understanding! A snippet from the email:

"I have placed a warning flag on the badge in question. once I do the research it will be moved to the fake section."

                  So good on them

They didn't even come close with the 1st Eboat marking. SBW?

Accidentally offending people on the internet since 1997
