Excellent thread and will provide an easy reference guide to identify genuine badges of one of the most faked KM awards

A classic "Type 1" (UC# 5.6.1) in very nice condition.

            Best regards,

              I agree with Norm
And the condition is also very nice, quite difficult to find a FO u-boat with such great gilt.

Has anyone ever seen a maker mark like this?

The "f" is without horizontal arm. Artificially aged and with false patina?

                      Hi William,
                      Interesting example, thanks for posting
IMO this is original type 1 zinc FO U-boat. Indeed part of the maker's mark is missing but I think that just something went wrong during the casting process. I have not seen missing cross-bar on the 'f' so far but deficient makers marks are not a rare phenomenon on FO u-boats.
                      Cheers,
                      Hubert

I agree, a good Type 1 with either a defective maker mark or just deteriorated with heavy wear/poor storage causing bits of the mark to separate off.

                        Best regards,
                        ---Norm

Fine original uboat for me as well Billy. Probably just a dirty die responsible for the missing arms of the maker mark.

If it doesn't have a hinge and catch, I'm not interested......well, maybe a little

would not a dirty die put a mark on the badge not miss a bit out

No, debris or dirt on the reverse die would create a profile that results in a negative defect in the badge. If debris was just filling the recess of the negative f.o. mark in the reverse die, then that would cancel out the positive profile mark in the actual badge.

It's a reasonable theory, but it could also be that those bits were just sheared off in the final product.

                              Best regards,
