What a lucky man you are, I would give a half of my collection without thinking for such badge!

I can understand the comments of collectors who have never seen one of these before. Carsten Baldes told me he was offered one of these for a very modest sum at one of the German shows and his colleague thought he was mad to buy such an obvious fantasy item so he told him to go around to see Detlev and tell him he had an Auxilliary Cruiser marked "Sterling" and see what happens. Within minutes Detlev was on Carsten's stand with a wad of cash and bought the badge giving Carsten an instant and substantial profit.

      Great story Stan.

I bet Detlev sold it for a "substantially" higher price?

      Cheers,Martin.

        Hi Larry,

These were made in Japan for the Aux crews in the Pacific. The japanese also made a very rare EK1 which you occasionally see for sale.

Does anybody remember what the one on estand here sold for? Sat for a few days then was bought. I think less than 3500 euros.

Think Monsoon bought it, maybe not.

Valuation is the price it sold for for badges like this. That variation in price can be quite substantial.

              Hello,

I have had two pieces in my navy collection and I sold both for 3.000 € each 4 years ago.

              Now I think that 3.500 - 4.000 € is a real price for a sterling aux.

Looks like a tombak example and it comes with provenance from a Thor crewman.
                      Very nice.

                      Regards,Martin.

With the original posted. It is nice to hear such praise from several members with extensive background stating that this was a good example badge.
Quite a good thread and I enjoyed learning much from it.
Cheers and Congratulations on this badge.

                            Aux Cruiser Sterling

Although these are very rare badges, I have still been offered approx 5 over the past ten years and have never bothered adding one to my collection. IMO they are worth between €2,500-€3,500 and unless you are a Kriegsmarine afficiado then you would probably be happier with a nice Schwerin in tombac.

                              Stan,

i'd be more than than happy to part with a nice tombak Schwerin for one of these Japanese made pieces.
But i am a Hilfskreuzer "geek",as Norm would say.

                              Cheers,Martin.

                                Hello Martin,
I am an Hilfskreuzer "geek" too

                                Hello John,
yes I have bought the one on estand last year, for less than 3500 euros. So there are other WAF members with such badges in there collection

The left badge is from an member of the "Uckermark" and "Charlotte Schliemann", the right one from an Hilfskreuzer "Michel" member.

                                Regards,
