I do not know for sure. I had kept many of the badges in inert Mylar storeage bags, of archival quality, and they still have faded. I believe it is only time, and the atmosphere, that makes them loose their finish from microflaking away.
I do wrap the foam backing in Mylar, but the blue is a fuzzy surface is on fine foam also. I wish we could halt the deterioration, but I believe we cannot, without putting a clear coat of laquer over the badges. This is not something I wish to do, although I know collectors who use a neutral finish Krylon on all their badges.
