    U-Boat Badge

At a local militaria fair, I had this badge handed to me, and the question asked - Is it the good, the bad, or outright ugly of badges.
As I didnt have my scales, micrometer or jewellers loop, and any real expertese on such a badge, I did the next best thing, I took pictures and posted it here.

Where is the propeller? I don't think this is even a good fake of a Schwerin.

            U-boat badge

            Hello,
You don't need a loop for that one, the badge is bad.

That being said it is based on a design by Hymenn and that type of badge does not have a propeller.

So not all original U-boat badges have a propeller.

            Regards,
            Jody

Here is the real deal from Gordon Williamson (I hope he does not mind me using his images, if so I will remove them):

                Hi,

I can only agree with Jody - a schwerin marked bad casting from a Hymmen-like badge.

                Regards
                Mike

                    Hi John,
I am sorry I got the pictures messed up, I corrected it now. I placed the image of Gordon's badge on the thread.

That is interesting that it is now not a Hymenn. I learned something new.

                    Regards,
                    Jody

Well Jody, it was assumed until just recently (Torpedo Los by Gordon W.) and a few recent opinions by him that the Hymenn badges were only those at the top of your thread (not the fake). Personally, I am not so sure, but it does not matter. The postcards match the second badge that I posted and it is possible in my mind, but not possible to prove, that they were indeed Hymenn variations by that company.

No matter, they are period badges with plenty of provenance.

All that said, the badge first posted at the top of the thread is a fake--thought it was made in your neck of the woods and peddled as a Scherwin for many years. John

Actually, Gordon's "Hymmen" badge has a vertical wide body (coke bottle) style pin. The badge shown is not a Hymmen, but a similar pattern badge by an unknown maker. I'm still working that one.

But all Schwerins have a propeller which was my point.
