Mine measures 38.7 x 47.9 mm and weighs 20.7 g. Not sure what to make of this compared to Gordon's! Smaller in one direction by what I'd call a significant amount but longer in the other direction by a similar amount! No strong signs of die striking on my example - only lots of fine hand finishing/filing marks. The measurements variations may be due to hand finishing.
The absence of shear marks is not a concern as my genuine unmarked Schwerin U-boat badge only has hand finishing marks as well.
Re the weight, I'm guessing it may be due to thickness variations. My badge is 3.4 mm thick at the widest point (measured at the hull of the boat below the conning tower). How does yours compare in this respect Gordon?
