unfortunately Detlev didnt sell any 1st pattern uboot spange in that price.
he sold some 2nd pattern bronze uboot spange.

Much depends on the conditon, but if Detlev sold a first pattern frontspange in good conditon for 600 euros, then it was a steal. It would not be the first time he sold an item well under what other dealers or collectors would accept, but then again, a few hundred under the market clears it off his update pretty quickly.

I would agree with Jody pretty much and based on what I have observed over the years, assuming you can find one, I price it at 1200+.

In fact, I have only seen one for sale in the last several years and it was on estand--maybe longer. How many have others seen, and from whom, in this timeframe, I would be interested to know?

One from Detlev apparently (maybe not) and one on estand. Others? I am not counting the mint silver version sold by Gordon Williamson, just the bronze in any condition.

Detlev did sell a first pattern around the 600 Euro to 675 Euro price range about one to two years ago . I kept a copy of it. It was a very zincy looking badge with not much of its chocolate brown type of baked lacquer finish left on it.

These first model U-Boat clasps seem to often have a problem with the solder holding the hinge. The hinge seems to pop off over time with the leverage of the pin against it through opening and closing. You often see them with the pin & hinge lose from the badge or sometimes repaired because of this. They also more often than not have a baked lacquered finish on zinc rather than the heavy plated metal type on monkey metal found on the second model.

Probably the reason why "Schwerin" introduced the second and improved model in this respect.

The badge which started this thread has one of the better finishes that I have seen on a first model bronze and I wonder if it was fixed up at the factory before sale but after they realised that there were potential hinge/ catch problems with this model and then refinished off again at the factory after the strengthening.
