A Schwerin 1st pattern E-boat badge in ZINC, from a slightly different die than the TOMBAK 1st pattern E-boats?
Tom D.If it doesn't have a hinge and catch, I'm not interested......well, maybe a littleNew Book - The German Close Combat Clasp of World War II

I agree with Tom. It's a Zinc Badge (you can see grey traces on the 2 oclock portions of the wreath).
However, not seeing much more (ie. reverse), I would speculate a possible repaint based on the zinc showing in the lower crevices of the wreath and not on the high spots normally associated with normal wear to the finish.

Expansion - "o" and Assmann badges had vertical pins whereas this one is horizontal (unless Frank's done a shonky with the scan), it's not a "French" example and it's definitely not a Schwerin. Doesn't leave many makers!

Ok - you are driving me/us nuts. If it is repro - you would not have put it up. Obviously has a horizontal pin. The wreath has some areas that look almost as if they were cast with poor detail - above the bow. Whats with the irregularity/inclusion on the bow? The waves do not match the S&L. It is not Schwerin. There must be something unique here, a clue. In some places the finish is worn through and you said it was zink. How about a field made piece? That would explain some of the wreath issues and the acorns don't have much detail. A field made piece never would have had as good a finish. The windows in the boat look like they have been cleaned up prior to finish. The bow is very pronouned in relief, the feet of the eagle are very strange ..... Certainly not a Japanese equivalent of the aux cruiser? Made in Spain during the Spanish War? Something tells me this is not a German made piece. When do we get the answer???? Not being an expert, I have nothing to lose.

clueless!
Trying to think why it would be made of zinc?
Never seen one or heard of one before but a wild guess at "f,o"?, nope I've changed my mind and will go for GWL.
I'm sure I have seen that style eagles head somewhere before perhaps on a U-boat badge but can't recallRegards, Rob
