    E-boat First Type

Merdock, our new English member sent me scans of a E-Boat badge 1st pattern that he wants comments and opinions on.
Here is Merdock's information about his badge:

    "Hi,

How come there is no pin on the back of the badge on the second pic? (or am I mistaken)

Ok, I will give it a shot, here are my thoughts:

While the badge itself doesn´t look utterly bad on the bad pics, there is a very alogical element in the maker´s mark:

Alois Rettenmaier was located in Schwäbisch-Gmünd (notice TWO Umlauts in the city name). As you know, these Umlauts can be written two ways in German. Either as shown above or like Schwaebisch-Gmuend (more unusual, but still possible).

The maker´s mark on the badge goes a strange way, it combines BOTH possibilities of spelling it, which is very unlikely. But even more suspicious is that the Ä in Schwäbisch is missing the two little dots as far as I can see on the blurry picture. Gmünd is abbreviated and a 6 is put at the end to make this resemble a period German address much like "Berlin 68". It is strange though to connect the number 6 with the rest of the address with a "-". Not very likely and highly unusual.

Apart from that, the maker´s mark looks quite unprofessional, like somebody made up a stamp and whammed it into the badge.

And: To the best of my knowledge AM was not a maker of these badges, was he?

@GmanII: pin is open and folded up in the second pic.

        Cheers, Frank H.

                Hello,

Well, I am not well versed in German grammatical form so I learned something new. It does appear to be a crude makers mark .

The lines of the boat seem consistant as well as the waves and the positioning of the boat where it breaks the wreath. The obverse does not appear to present any concerns. The reverse does, the makers mark wich is the obvious concern, interesting how the mark goes beyong the badge. I think that is the only issue would have.

                Thank You,
                JD

                    nah.

I have handled fakes of this badge that were better made than this one. Close but no cigar.

Fuzzy scans always make me suspicious...
Not enough detail to confirm or deny...
                      The mark looks bad...
                      The badge is crude looking.

Me no like... I am open to discussion and other opinions...
But I wouldn't pay good money for it.

                        Hi,
sorry for the poor pictures i'm still leaning with the camera.
the makers mark on the rear ends with a double number but i can't make out the last one, apart from the hapazardous stamping the constuction is excellent thought i'd post it for comments. there's no doubt to it being original and by the way it was Free.

p.s. i also have several panzer badges that were free also they my help people to identify features.

                          Dear all,
as the name of the town is " Schäbisch Gmünd " i also think there are 2 errors in the name on the backside ! Not a good sign !

                            Hi,
perhaps the name on the rear is a distributer not a manufacturer?

                              Not for me

Sorry don't like this at all, I have never seen anything like it before. especially with a flat back. This would tend to make the badge quite heavy, any idea of weight? The makers mark looks too unprofessional also.

The other major point of note is that this has a cut out swastika and also the french baquville style eagle. Would possibly suggest that it is a cast of the french style badge?

                              Regards
                              Rob,
