Finish looks a little odd to me as well. The color is a not bad, reminds me of some Juncker CCCs I have seen, but the odd thing is that there doesn't appear to be any oxidation bubbles or hardly any wear, which you would expect to find with original finish on a zinc badge 70+ years later.

Can we see some more shots of the hinge and catch with the pin open and out of the way? Would also like to see some closeups of the obverse and reverse so we can see the texture of the finish.

Let see more details about the APB story. As you know I am always looking for some nice examples of Gablonz made badges for my collection. Recently I came accros and old collection. I was able to pick up here very nice JFS GAB some time ago .Yesterday I took another Gablonz gems from the same source - silver and bronze 25 PABs. As I know Gablonz badges I didnt doubt about the originality and took both PABs without hesitating. In the same collection there was the gold APB – I am absolutely no expert on APBs but this piece made good impression on me. The price was very very low so I took the risk ( almost no risk) and bought it. I asked the collector about the origin of the APB and got the story that he became the badge for free in 1970 in Brünn when the former Gestapo offices were cleaned and the badge was found.

This could explain why the finish is so nicely preserved.

I compared the finish with other civil period badges that I have in my collection and it matches. It must be the same coating technology. See the comparasion. In the deep areas the gold finish hase the same brown color as on the other badges. See also the different gold color on zinc body and on the tombac hardware. The finish on tombac hardware is more gold and shiny. See also details of the corrosion etc. I would not expect this on repainted badge.

Tomorrow I will make more day light pictures , also some pictures with the opened hardware.

I give a good chance that this is a real, very good preserved example of golden APB.

Now I am interested in your opinions.

I guess it's not correct to compare Juncker pieces with the other makers. The biggest red flag to me is that your badge has pin of the same color as the wreath. It's not what I expect from Juncker badges with their black pins.

Hi,

here are some day light pictures with details of the finish.

Alex - I just wanted to show that the type of finish matches to the period finish that was used in the war and pre war time.

I dont see problem that the pin is coated. I think that usually the complete badge was coated including the hardware. The pin is buntmetal so the coating holds here much better than on the steel pin. The badge was not worn so the pin was not exposed to abrasion.

This are just my thoughts - lets see the others opinions.......

Now I'm 100% sure the badge is repainted. You can see the traces of the correct black paint on the pin tube.
