      Thanks for the pictures. No problems with this at all. Looks like a good original type 2a to me. Don't have any trouble with the baacking. First time I've seen Brown backing, but looks right. At the end of the war there were lots of different shades of colour in wool based uniforms as captured Russian uniforms were thrown into the mix. Therefore, I think it's perfectly reasonable to see Brown coloured wool, indicative of the re-cycling of Russian uniforms.

          Honestly, this gold TDB has some features which are not consistant with the known originals and the brown backing is not identical to the brown backings normaly found silver tdb's!

                The golden strip itself, and the folding. Would like to see a clear detail shot of the tank to.
                The brown backing reminds me more of the typical "austrian" fake then the original brown wool backing.

                    Backing Material

                    As far as backing material go's, the makers of these used whatever they had on hand. Color of material DOES NOT denote branch of service at all ! Graig's brown backed badge looks ok to me. I would like better pic's of the tank and would like to know if the tank is magnetic however. Tom Breyette

                      Will be glad to post close-ups at some point for educational purposes, Henirich, but this is direct from a veteran family, and I have no need, given the glowing reviews I've received here, to do further investigation. It's nice to see that it's accepted as a 100% original example, but the primary purpose of my thread was to discuss backing colors, which has been educational for sure, for me.

                          Absolutely. By the way, is it the "tank" or the internal "backplate" that is the actual ferrous part?

                            Both the tank and the backplate can be magnetic IMO. But in some cases, the backplate was made of zinc, and therefore not magnetic.

                              Weird, I always just stuck a magnet to the whole thing, and when it stuck, I was happy. I will check to see if one or both elements are magnetic, later today, and post the result! I will also post a close-up of the tank for study purposes. I have to dig out my TDB book - it's somewhere in the office, and it's a good book!

                                I agree, but in your book, pgs #16 and #18, you inferred "Army" green wool and "Luftwaffe" blue wool. Yes, I also agree there were exceptions, especially later in the war, and they probably improvised, whatever, was on hand. And IMO the coarse brown material here, looks to be a later, coarser textile.
