Hi Alan,
Looks like a fine original FLL clasp. Looks textbook in every regard, but too bad about the missing backplate and its hard to tell exactly how much of the bronze finish is left on it.

As long as the base metal is zinc, no problem. A couple pointers: 1) You only need a few hours before wiping, unless you have a severe case of zinc pest, then atleast a day. 2) When wiping, don't wipe --rather dab the Vaseline off. This way you don't take any of the sensitive finish beneath off. I recommend a flat tipped fine artists brush to clean in the grooves etc.
