            Hi Alan,

Looks like a fine original FLL clasp. Looks textbook in every regard, but too bad about the missing backplate and its hard to tell exactly how much of the bronze finish is left on it.

If it doesn't have a hinge and catch, I'm not interested......well, maybe a little

                Vaseline

I'm new to this forum and dont have a lot of collecting experience, What is the vaseline used for and what can it do to a piece?

Please check my recent Juncker CCC thread and you'll see. You'll find it by doing a search under "Preserving a combat worn badge".

                    Vaseline

Thanks for the help. I checked out your thread on the Junker CCC clean up. It was great and I would like to try this on my IAB. Does it have the same effect with the silver wash as it did with the bronze?

As long as the base metal is zinc, no problem. A couple pointers: 1) You only need a few hours before wiping, unless you have a severe case of zinc pest, then atleast a day. 2) When wiping, don't wipe --rather dab the Vaseline off. This way you don't take any of the sensitive finish beneath off. I recommend a flat tipped fine artists brush to clean in the grooves etc.
