Well, I like it, the catch, the non cut out swastika, eagle all match to P&L variant, only the hinge is bit different esspecially the pin, but I have never seen a fake from this rare type yet. It would be nice to hear some more comments.

I would have to agree with Hans on the maker. It may have been a "ground-dug" piece? I've seen pitting like that on nickel silver (nickel/brass) badges. However, now that you cleaned it, it will hurt the value. 70+ years of patina is what it's all about on a badge like that. --Rgds, Ken

I am not a fan of this badge.

Post #7 shows what appear to be a lot of problem areas for me.

Also, the hinge is strange, can you confirm if it is a folded sheet metal hinge or completely solid?

Can we see the cleaned reverse please.

I see what you mean in post 7 Graeme. That shine I'm seeing ontop of the hinge looks like buffing to take out the seam which is indicative of the hardware being cast as part of the badge. --Also, that "pitting" can be found on that particular pedigree of cast fakes. On closer inspection, the "baseplate", as well as the "C-catch" look to be cast right into the badge. --Good eye. --Rgds, Ken

Hello Graeme,

Mayer design of course, but if you check Petz & Lorenz EKI, spangen, Kriegsmarine badges etc. you can see that they used this type (or similar as this badge is maybe a fake) hinge not Mayer.
