Interesting pieces. They look believable to me.
Nick, does the flak match any known FAKE flaks? I am not ready to toss these in the bin yet as the base metal looks believable IMO.

Hi Nick
Not sure about your comment regarding the luft flak being 2 part. The "planchet" shown in this thread is for the main part. If this is real, then assembly would happen after this stage.
I looked briefly at my "S&L" and thought they were very similar. But admit I have not studied this in detail
Here it is for comparison

Badges with the rounded like this are found on flak fakes. Looks like the claw fake wreath on 397. Where is the roundel on that S&L????Last edited by Nick Carraway; 05-01-2012, 06:43 PM.

Hi Nick
I did say it "maybe" S&L. Good point about the breech area.
The "planchet" looks pretty detailed imo. Could you post one of the fakes you are talking about. I have a feeling that there were several variations of the "claw" fake. It would be interesting to see one with the same detail and exact design..
cheers

Hi Guys
If this planchet does not match any known originals (as of today) as Nick pointed out, then you would have to be wary for sure.
But it would also be nice to see a match to a known fake, as Tom eluded to.
The claw fake in the link Nick kindly posted is no where near close.
regards
Graeme

Nick, this planchet is different than the claw fakes. Looking at the fake on page 397 of the Garlasco book, and all the other "claw fakes" I have on file, you can see that they all have 2 rows of rivets at the base of the gun. However, the planchet only has 1 row of rivets, so clearly not the same.
If this planchet is fake, then it is a new and different fake then we have seen before. But I am not sure we are looking at a fake yet. It looks to be an exact match to the S&L flak badges. And just because it doesn't have a roundel next to the breech, how do you know that ALL S&L flak badges didn't have a roundel when it was first punched out, but was trimmed off when the rest of the flashing was cut away?

And what do you know! Just looking through all the S&L flaks I had on file, I found one where you can see that there WAS a roundel on them when they were produced. But it must have been trimmed away!!! That is interesting..
