These badges were made in 2 steps. The first was to punch out a planchet, like what is shown by Frankdracman. The 2nd step was to cut all the excess flashing off from around the wreath. This was a machine process, all done in one quick step with a tool that was like a cookie cutter. When S&L made their cookie cutter, it looks like the decided to produce it so that it would slice off the roundel. No big deal, it was probably easier to make the cookie cutter straight in this area rather than complicate it by forming out the roundel. And it doesn't detract from the badge design, so it was probably no big deal to just remove it for ease of production.

Just look at the picture of the S&L badge I posted, you can see remnants of the roundel! Are you denying that it is there??

If it doesn't have a hinge and catch, I'm not interested......well, maybe a little

Not at all! I just thoroughly enjoy giving you a hard time. I only wish your state had supported gay marriage so we might have a shot together.

Seriously though, you convinced me. Looks very good and now I will pull all my photos of S&L flaks to look for this.

Tom, that is an interesting pic you posted of your "S&L" Flak..It makes my comment in post #3 seem not so wild now

Nick, this planchet is different than the claw fakes. Looking at the fake on page 397 of the Garlasco book, and all the other "claw fakes" I have on file, you can see that they all have 2 rows of rivets at the base of the gun. However, the planchet only has 1 row of rivets, so clearly not the same.
