    Silver PAB - Wiedmann

    Hi,

I would be grateful for comments on the authenticity of this silver PAB marked Wiedmann which I acquired in the 70's. I will attempt to show pictures as this my first posting and I'm still learning my way around. Thanks,

    John (tudorw)

I have not received any replies to my query regarding the authenticity of my silver PAB. Perhaps members cannot access my photos so I've just this minute paid for an association membership so that i can post images directy just as soon as I get the administrator's authorization. Would really appreciate help on this. Thanks !

          Good choice!

Your PAB is a mighty fine Wiedmann and 100% original.

          Regards,

            Hello John,

Looks like a nice badge. But I think the pin is a replacement. As far as I know, Wiedmann did not use a "shepherd crook" pin on this type of badge. Their pins had a small bend at the hinge end and were soldered directly to the hinge pin. (At least with this type of hinge.) They did use a "shepherd crook" pin on some badges, but those having the more conventional sheet metal hinge.

            Best regards,
            Tom

Pin & hinge should look like these:

                Thanks Tyanacek,

It looks like I have the correct hinge but a replaced pin, is that correct ? The less commonly found version with the shepherd's crook pin has a different hinge altogether, is that right ? Could you clarify this ?

                Many thanks for your insights.

                Cheers,
                john

                  John, I agree with Tom.
If you look closely at the hinge pin, you may find that the original has broken off and someone has added the shepard's hook fastening pin, possibly from another badge.

                    hi Ralph and Tom,

You guys are top notch ! I looked at the hinge with a loupe and I found a spot of solder where the old pin must have been , confirming that the shepherd's crook pin is a replacement. This has been a great learning experience for me and I hope others.

                    Thanks, once again !
                    John

                      Hello John,

Yes! That is exactly what I was saying.

Here is a Wiedmann Infantry Assault Badge with a conventional sheet metal hinge which, of course, uses a shepherd crook pin.

Also, I should add that your hinge had to be modified in order to make use of the shepherd crook pin. The part of the hinge directly below the hinge pin had to be ground down otherwise the shepherd crook pin would never be able to wrap around the hinge pin. There is not enough space to fit the pin unless you enlarge the opening. I hope this makes sense.

In the picture below, the shaded area shows how the hinge had to be modified in order to fit a shepherd crook pin.

                        Best regards,
                        Tom

Great information ! How does this hinge alteration and replaced pin affect value ?

You have enkindled a renewed interest in these badges and medals, so much so I just bought your book " Parade Medal Bars of the Third Reich" at Amazon. Well, I assume you are indeed the author !

                          Cheers,

                              Hi John,

                              Firstly, welcome to the forum.

I agree with Tom, your badge is a fine original but with a replaced pin IMO.

I think that alot of guys do not like following links to pictures, so its good you became an association member and are now able to post your pics directly to the server. I think you will find that you will get alot more opinions that way.

If it doesn't have a hinge and catch, I'm not interested......well, maybe a little
