    Mayer IAB & GAB

    Hello guys,

my friend László got these badges yesterday. Both are very nice tombak examples with only a little wear IMO.

Very nice badges, these are stunning to say the least. I wish my Mayers looked like this.

Wow, both beauties Hans! Wonderful condition, with just the right amount of wear. Congrats to your friend.

If it doesn't have a hinge and catch, I'm not interested......well, maybe a little

State of preservation is immaculate. A more common early maker, but certainly in uncommon condition.

The GAB almost looks like a zinc stamped, unless the dark spots are dirt or shadows. I don't really see any buntmetall coming through on that one.

Great looking stuff there! They are all really really nice...It makes me want to sell all my zinc stuff and only collect the tombak stuff. But if I did that I probably wouldnt ever find anything at shows.

              Regards,
              Chris G.

                Hello Dave,

you cannot encounter a finish like that on a zinc example, also if you check the details you can see that there are yellow spots on the badge, especially on the grenade and the feathers.

Yeah, I agree about the finishing on tombak, it must be shadows, or my eyes, it just looks dark in the leaf recesses. I am having trouble seeing the yellowish color, but again it's got to be on my end. Great badges again.

Altough, I am not sure that Mayer used only tombak and zinc material for their badges. Here is my example, you can't find yellow spots on it, just some dark area, maybe its made from a white basemetal?

As you can see the finish is also totally different, on László's badge the highlights are polished on mine they are not.

                          Possibly made of steel?
                          If not magnetic maybe aluminum?
Very interesting piece you have there Hans.

                            Hi guys,

Hans, I would think your badge is made from Nickel Silver or some other type of white metal alloy. Nickel Silver is the same as brass, just with a little Nickel added to it to make it look more silver rather than yellow.

I would doubt very much if it is magnetic, I don't recall any Mayer GAB variants made from steel.
