Hi Dan'
There was a badge-blowout on another forum from where these badges are from (approx 17 pcs), there was also a comment from the seller:
"All badges have been cleaned by me with a mild soap under warm water. To remove dust and fat. Apart from the NS Wiedmann was subsequently polished slightly"

Hi Ken and Laszlo,
I seriously doubt that you can remove all oxidation and patina only with mild soap and water. The IAB definitely was dipped in a stronger detergent to do that.
I am not saying it is a bad thing to do, I simply don´t want to buy a "mint/near mint" badge that was dipped in that stuff, because we simply don´t know about the side effects of that fluid and what it does to these badges in five or ten years.
Regards,
Daniel

Thanks for that Dan. I agree. I remember once upon a time cleaning a NS early Juncker with the "soldered on - saw cut" hinge. It had a lot of "golden" patina mixed with some funky rainbow colors. I didn't like it and chose to "clean" it with, you guessed it, BRASSO. Not only did it remove and make my badge sparkle like a headlight, but it took off a lot (and I mean a lot) of detail in that eagle, as well as the wreath! And, once I put that $_!T on, I new I made a mistake, but had no choice, except to buff it. To be honest, I've never seen a "mint" badge in hand or even in a museum for that matter. Better to leave it alone if possible. And, the "patina" ended up returning, but worse on my EARLY NS Juncker...minus some of the original detail... ---That wuz a while ago....

...more
...and then to add insult to injury, I ended up "trading" (2000-2001) that NS Juncker for the "fake" hollowback bronze SHuCo badge. Remember that thread? To give you a timeline on how "fast" "patina" on the return of the patina was about 2 years. BRASSO is a harsh product and yields harsh after effects.
