    Hello Jazz,
OK, so the opening of the catch is at the bottom where it should be. I thought that this was probably just a language misunderstanding.

      Hello Steve,
Here is the difference between the first pattern and second pattern FLL's.
On the obverse first pattern. Better quality base metal, better overall detail, better finish, and typically a little more vault to the clasp.

obverse second pattern. (this one is a silver, but it still shows the differences)

lesser quality base metal, detail not as distinct, inferior finish that does not stand the test of time, and slightly less vault.

Second pattern catch. (bigger, beefier metal stock catch, soldered to an eliptical plate that is soldered to the badge)

Here are the reverse views. Notice how the bellied part of the pin has been ground down on the top clasp. This grinding looks like it was done a long time ago. My theory on this is that the original recipient probably was sporting a ribbon bar up until the time he received this decoration. When awarded the Clasp, he probably removed his ribbon bar and went to replace it with this more prestigious award. But the wide bellied pin probably did not pass through the small loops for his ribbon bar so he ground down the pin to make it fit. Just a thought I had about this. I love pieces like this. Certainly not in the best of condition, and not bright and shiny, but they show alot of character and attest to having been there in the thick of the fight. Also, because of the missing backing plates and the faded out finish, alot cheaper to buy.

                          Hi Tom,

Nice detail that modified pin on the top CCC. Never seen that before but your explanation makes perfect sense

                              Hello friends,

with this thesis - what would you say about this one? First or second pattern. It´s not Zinc made.

                              Best wishes

                                Hello Joerg,

Could we see a picture of the reverse of your clasp, or do we first have guess whether it is a first or second pattern? Are you sure that the clasp is not zinc?
                                Best regards! Tom Yanacek
