Well, number of posts doesn´t mean anything. Other forum give out "awards" to most frequent posters, but it can be observed there that an idiot remains an idiot, even after thousands of posts. Credit has to be deserved otherwise.

24141, it is not just the angle.

You are correct Frank, but in your case I know the quality of your posts.

Frank, I appreciate you taking the time to continue this discussion. I just happened to see this discussion taking place, and as a relative newbie checked out both pictures and although there are _some_ differences visible, I am trying to work out for myself which differences are 'significant' as I have recently acquired a small collection of artifacts.

On this item, the differences you pointed out were the pin: the pins on the real items are indeed slimmer at the end and more erm... well, less fat in the middle

However, if we take both badges pictured on the 75 page, although they have the same pin, the top badge has the hinge composed of the same material as the pin, the bottom badge has the hinge composed of a different coloured metal. The cutouts below the eagle's wings are more oval on the supposed fake than on the former 75 badge, but the latter 75 badge has quite irregular cutouts.

The hook is more recessed in the upper 75 badge than in the lower - the 'fake' more resembles the upper 75 in this case.

What I am really trying to discover is which differences you would particularly draw attention to and use to state that a piece is a fake - i.e. which differences are 'significant' - becuase both those 75 badges are fairly different from each other, but I assume they are equally valid.

I would appreciate the benefit of your experience on this matter, if you have the time!

          Dear Harvey,

There is no difference in the metals used between both original badges. One held the finish better than the other one. Pin and catch are magnetic steel, restof the badge is zinc.

The badge in question in this thread here has many good features, actually it would fool anyone from pics alone if we would just look at the obverse. I assume this is due to a very good casting.
The reverse is more revealing, for me, especially the pin and the catch. Not only does the pin of the badge in question have a wrong shape (especially in the lower third), it also looks different in cross section. It seems to be very flat on it´s top while original badges´ pins have ever so slightly vaulted pins with more rounded edges.
          Cheers, Frank

I like wandering into a discussion, especially when I'm working in Photoshop!

here's a few details. no need to label what's what, I think you'll see the differences...
            best regards

              Hi,

unfortunately I must agree, it is a reproduction badge.

Save your money and give it back.

best advice i have heard, why wont people listen to those that know. if the badge is questionable then proof is given why it is a fake..then end of dicussion. we have all had bad stuff in our collections and getting over our embarrassment for not wanting to see the facts is the start of being a real collector.

Please check the following link which also describes "Third Reich" badges. Note the distictly different hinge from that pictured in the link on page 1.
