PAB with unusual revers fittings

Hi fellows:

What do you guys think about this one? The age appears honest and the finish is at about 50 percent. The reverse catch and hinge are unusual. I have seen the hinge before, but not the catch. Does anybody know who made this piece or even if it is correct?

The reverse is scooped out.

How many different panzer badge maker variations do you think there are? Maybe over 100?

I am waiting for a book on Panzer badges by Philippe and one on war badges in general by Frank...even with the internet there is nothing as fun as looking at pictures and reading a book with these great badges in it.

Hi John,


Depends a little on how you look at it. If you take in to account every reverse setup variant, finish variant and maker mark variant you definitely will and up with more than 100.

If you stick to the known and unknown maker variants in buntmetall, and zinc both massive an hollow there aren't that many arround. I have all the info in a spreadsheet at home. I'll see if I can make a quick count tonight.

As Philippe mentioned in the other thread he referenced, sometimes on these "Zimmermanns" with alternate reverse setups you can still see the raised guidelines for the more usual "Zimmermann" hinge and catch. Here's another one with a different type of catch; you can clearly see the raised guideline still in the catch area. It's also under the hinge of this one, though it doesn't show clearly in the scan.

I think I see on your badge a "shadow" of the remains of the guideline in the catch area.

I see something that looks like a round "shadow" by the catch on my piece...it may indeed be the guide line for the catch, but it is very light.

It is amazing how the hinge on these pieces stays on...very little solder was used and yet the bond seems to be strong as they have held up all these years.
